Upcycling is a newer term that was coined to help spread awareness about reusing items rather than trashing them. This is also a preferable method, environmentally speaking, to recycling which still takes a LOT of energy and money to turn recycled materials into new usable iems. And, secondly, recycled materials can only be used or recycled so many times before they eventually end up in the garbage.
When the choice is made to upcycle, or repurpose and reuse, the item will indefinitely stay out of the landfills. This action actually takes it ‘up’ out of the waste ‘cycle’, i.e. upcycling!
In the end, upcycling saves energy and cost to society and doesn’t involve breaking down the properties of the original item you are upcycling.
